Stump Grinding
For a typical stump grinding job we grind about 4 to 6 inches below grade. This allows new soil to level the area and new grass plenty of soil depth. Grinding deeper is more costly, a bigger clean up job and more prone to settling creating a dip in the yard. If shallower than 3", the grass will not flourish and often browns out in the summer. To save money, we do offer grinding the stump just to grade level. This improves aesthetics, removes the trip hazard, eliminates the need to trim around the stump and allows mowers to clear the stump without catching.
Some stumps have exposed roots or mounds around them. We can grind the exposed roots flush with the ground or remove them. The entire mound can usually also be ground flush to the surrounding area as well. Occasionally large rocks prevent this. Some large maple trees can have surface roots across the entire area under the tree canopy. These require a lot of work to grind, remove debris, spread topsoil and seed.

Mulch Removal
Grinding a stump creates a mixture of wood chips and dirt. A flush cut stump one foot in diameter ground 5" deep produces about a 5 gallon bucket of debris. However, a 5 foot diameter stump with just a small hump can result in a huge 5 cubic yard pile. Removing this mulch is labor intensive. It is costly to have us do it, but we will if needed.
Topsoil and Seed
If your stump was in a lawn, you'll likely want grass were the stump was. No matter what size stump you had ground, the best practice is to remove most of the stump grinding debris and bring in and compact new topsoil. The existing lawn can 'reclaim' the bare spot or it can be re-seeded. Beware, re-seeding usually results in a patch of grass that stands out from the rest of your lawn. Small one foot diameter stumps need only a bag or two of soil. Large 5 foot diameter stumps require about a cubic yard of topsoil or more. This is labor intensive. Again, it is costly, but we offer the service if needed.
Sod is another option to restore the lawn; however, we have been unable to find reasonably priced readily available sod when needed. Perhaps you will.
